Lee Lawrie's Atlas is perhaps his most famous work. It's one of 14 works of art Lawrie created at Rockefeller Center.
Installed in 1937, Atlas' was the largest armillary sphere ever cast, (at least as of 1937). The entire fixture stands 45 feet tall: Atlas is 15 feet tall and the armillary is 21 feet tall. It was cast by the Roman Bronze works and weighs 7 tons. Source: Arcitectural Forum, March 1937.
Hundreds of thousands of people may pass by Atlas every year, yet Lawrie remains nearly anonymous...While Rockefeller Center probably receives more notariety than any other sites of his work, Lawrie's largest body of work lies half a continent away...in the heart of the country.
