These images grace the Gymnasium Building at BoysTown. Here boys engage in wholesome activities and build character and strength through exercise.
In comparing these to Lawrie's earlier work, they are far less abstract than the Art Deco pieces he created in the 1920s and 1930s , but in the late 1940s when these works were commissioned, Art Deco tended to remind people too much of the Depression, and of the facist regimes that embraced it.
