Milton Defending Free Speech before Cromwell (1644) by Lee Lawrie, East Facade

Freedom of the Press, which appears in the Bill of Rights, can partly trace its origin to English law, when the poet Milton would argue in favor a this freedom.

Following the 17th Century English Civil War, Archbishop Laud had increased press censorship.

In 1644, Milton addresses Aeropagitica to Parliament, attacking press censorship and arguing that in a democracy, people are capable of choosing the truth over error.
