These are Purple Martins in their annual Pre-Migratory Roost, preparing to land in Austin, Texas, July 22, 2005.

An Audobon Society official predicted there were several hundred thousand birds in this gathering...

 

They gather together after fledging to congregate prior to flying to Brazil for the winter.
