The American Bison

Appearing several times within the screens are images of bison.

The American Bison or Buffalo as it was commonly known provided the Indians with food, shelter, clothing and even tools.

Once roaming the Great Plains in herds that stretched for miles, these majestic beasts were nearly hunted to the extinction.

This is a pure example of Lawrie's use of stylized design, to eliminate any surplus detail in creating his image of the buffalo.

One must consider this to be the highest form of Art Deco, transforming the portrait of the bison into a geometric, maplike design.

The bison head appears between the ribs of the screen which we will see are constructed from stylized arrows, arrowheads at the top, feathers at the bottom.
