Senate Chamber Doors, by Lee Lawrie
Nebraska State Capitol Building Pictured here is a Native American Chief and his wife. He holds a calumet, or peace pipe, wearing fully beaded clothing, and a full headdress decorated with eagle feathers.
He stands atop an otter, symbolic of Life. His wife carries a papoose as she stands atop a turtle. Both animals symbolize the reverence of nature.
Above them flies a Thunderbird, the bringer of life's sustaining rains to plains. These figures live under the sun and the stars. Corn, their sustenance, is displayed above them and a flower grows at her feet.
